What is the difference between a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon?

Although both specialists work closely in the care of patients with cardiovascular disease, their roles are distinct and complementary.
🩺 Cardiologist
A cardiologist focuses on diagnosing and medically treating heart conditions.
In most cases, they are the first specialist a patient sees. They evaluate symptoms, make a diagnosis, and start treatment. If more advanced or interventional care is needed, they may refer the patient to an interventional cardiologist or a cardiac surgeon.
They manage conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, arrhythmias, and coronary artery disease using:

• Non-invasive tests (ECG, echocardiography, stress testing)
They play a key role in prevention, diagnosis, and long-term follow-up
🫀 Interventional Cardiologist
This is a cardiologist with extra training in catheter-based (minimally invasive) procedures.
They do not perform open-heart surgery.
They treat problems using the blood vessels, such as:
• Angiography
• Stent placement (angioplasty)
• Some valve procedures (e.g. TAVI)
🔬 Cardiac Surgeon
A cardiac surgeon is a specialist who performs complex heart operations when surgery is the best or only option to treat the problem.
They treat conditions that need surgery, such as:
• Bypass surgery (CABG)
• Heart valve repair or replacement
• Congenital heart defects
• Aortic aneurysms
• Heart tumors
• Complex or redo heart surgeries
