Clinical Results 2025
The Cardiac Innovation Center of Apollonio Private Hospital, as part of its systematic data collection and commitment to full transparency, publishes the results of its cardiac surgeries for 2025. This initiative is an important step, as clear and objective information about the clinical performance of any cardiac surgery center is essential for both patients and healthcare system administrators. The analysis provides a detailed look at the quality of care delivered and allows comparison with internationally recognized reference data.
For this purpose, the Center’s results are presented in comparison with the official published 2023 data of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery (DGTHG) for cardiac surgery centers in Germany, which serve as an international reference in the field of cardiac surgery.

Clinical Results
In 2025, a total of 415 cardiac procedures were performed on patients aged from 2 months to 82 years, with a mean age of 57 years.
The overall mortality rate was 0.24% (1 patient).
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
A total of 134 CABG procedures were performed, including:

105 with cardiopulmonary bypass (on-pump CABG)

29 without cardiopulmonary bypass (off-pump CABG)
Mortality for all CABG procedures at the Cardiac Innovation Center was 0%, compared to a reported mortality of 2.4% in Germany in 2023 according to DGTHG data.
Valve Disease
A total of 89 procedures were performed for single valve disease.
This included 48 aortic valve replacements, 13 of which were minimally invasive. Mortality at the Cardiac Innovation Center was 0% for both, sternotomy and minimally invasive techniques. Corresponding published mortality rates in Germany range from 1.1% to 3.9%, depending on the type of procedure and surgical approach.
Additionally, 36 procedures were performed to repair or replace the mitral valve, with 0% mortality at the Cardiac Innovation Center. Published German data report mortality rates ranging from 1.1% to 6.4%, depending on technique and approach.
There were also 28 combined valve procedures (double or triple valves), all with zero mortality.
Among these cases, 6 patients had infective endocarditis, all successfully treated.
Combined Valve and CABG Procedures
22 combined valve and CABG procedures were performed at the Cardiac Innovation Center, with zero mortality. Corresponding published German data (DGTHG) report mortality rates ranging from 3.8% to 15.4%, depending on the type of valve procedure combined with CABG.
Aortic Disease
Outcomes in aortic disease were particularly notable, with 67 aortic procedures performed and an excellent clinical result with 1.5% mortality, compared to 2.2–12.2% in Germany. Among these, 4 patients had aortic dissection.
Congenital Heart Disease
Outcomes for congenital heart disease were also excellent, with 64 procedures, including 40 in pediatric patients, and zero mortality. Complex surgeries were included, such as complete atrioventricular canal repair, tetralogy of Fallot repair, DORV corrections, as well as reoperations.
Data Transparency
The Cardiac Innovation Center’s overall results, including detailed recording of major and minor complications, are fully accessible via the Center’s official website. Data collection, analysis, and presentation follow established international standards for reporting clinical outcomes.
The Center also extends an open invitation to the Cyprus Medical Association (ΠΙΣ) and the Cyprus Federation of Patients’ Associations (CyFPA) for independent review and validation of the published results.
Cardiac Surgery in Cyprus
In Cyprus in 2026, seven cardiac surgery centers operate within the GHS system and one outside it, totaling eight centers for a population of approximately 1,000,000. In comparison, Germany has 77 cardiac surgery centers for 83 million people, roughly 0.9 centers per one million population.
The relatively high ratio of cardiac centers per population makes systematic publication, evaluation, and comparison of clinical outcomes essential. Access to documented outcome data for patients, along with regulatory oversight by the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Organization (HIO), is a key requirement for ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in healthcare.
The Cardiac Innovation Center has demonstrated, over its 4.5 years of operation, that it is a center of excellence and a reference center for coronary disease, valve disease, aortic conditions, congenital heart disease, and rare cardiac conditions. Its clinical results are comparable to or better than those of international reference centers, confirming the Center’s consistent commitment to quality, safety, and responsible delivery of high-level cardiac surgical care.
