Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH): An Advanced Technique at Cardiac Innovation Center

Cardiac Innovation Center continues to expand its surgical capabilities by incorporating modern, minimally invasive techniques that contribute to improved surgical care and postoperative recovery.

As part of this ongoing development, our cardiac surgery team performs Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH) in selected patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG).

🔹 What is Endoscopic Vein Harvesting?

During coronary artery bypass surgery, blood vessel grafts are used to create new pathways for blood to reach the heart muscle, bypassing narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.

One of the vessels that can be used is the saphenous vein, which is harvested from the leg.

With the traditional approach, harvesting the vein requires a surgical incision along the leg. In contrast, EVH allows the vein to be harvested through a small incision using a specialised camera and endoscopic instruments.

🔹 What Are the Benefits for Patients?

✔️ Smaller surgical incisions and reduced trauma to the leg

✔️ Less postoperative pain and discomfort

✔️ Lower risk of wound infections and complications

✔️ Faster wound healing and easier mobilisation

✔️ Improved cosmetic results

Endoscopic Vein Harvesting is performed in selected patients according to specific criteria established by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO):

✔️ Patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) > 35

✔️ Patients with diabetes mellitus and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) > 7%

🔹 An Important Advancement in Comprehensive Surgical Care

EVH does not change how coronary artery bypass surgery itself is performed. Instead, it improves an important part of the procedure: harvesting the blood vessel used as a graft.

In cardiac surgery, progress extends beyond treating the heart condition itself. It involves improving every stage of the surgical process, with the aim of reducing the overall burden on the patient.

❤️ The introduction of Endoscopic Vein Harvesting further strengthens the capabilities of Cardiac Innovation Center and reflects our continued investment in modern surgical techniques, specialised expertise, and comprehensive cardiac surgical care.
