Dr. Ioannis Neophytou graduated from the University of Vienna in 2001 and obtained his specialist qualification in Cardiac Surgery in Germany in 2009. His professional career spans more than two decades in established cardiac surgery centres in Germany and Austria.
He trained and subsequently worked as a Cardiac Surgeon at the Heart and Vascular Clinic in Bad Neustadt an der Saale, Germany, before moving to Austria in 2011 as Senior Consultant in Cardiac Surgery at LKH Klagenfurt. From 2016 until August 2026, he served as Senior Consultant and Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at University Hospital St. Pölten, Austria.
Specialization and Expertise
Dr. Neophytou has extensive experience across the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, developed through more than two decades of clinical and surgical practice.
His experience encompasses both planned cardiac surgical procedures and the management of complex and highly acute cases, including surgery for aortic dissection. Throughout his career, he has been responsible for the comprehensive surgical care of adult cardiac surgery patients, from clinical assessment and operative treatment to postoperative follow-up.
Extensive Operative Experience
Dr. Neophytou brings particularly extensive hands-on surgical experience. Throughout his career, he has been involved in more than 6,000 cardiac surgical procedures.
Of these, he has performed more than 2,000 cardiac operations as an independent surgeon, covering the full spectrum of cardiac surgery, and has participated in more than 4,000 additional cardiac operations as first assistant.
This extensive operative exposure has provided him with substantial experience in managing both routine and particularly demanding cardiac surgical cases.
Leadership & Medical Education
Alongside his surgical practice, Dr. Neophytou has held significant clinical, organizational and leadership responsibilities. During his decade at University Hospital St. Pölten, he served as Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, contributing to the coordination and organization of the cardiac surgical service.
He has also been actively involved in the education and training of young surgeons, medical students and nursing staff and has maintained his professional development through regular participation in national and international cardiac surgery congresses and continuing medical education activities.
