Meet this week's young hero, Ionela. She traveled all the way from Romania to undergo surgery, as no hospital in her country could provide the necessary treatment. Previously, Ionela had undergone repair for Tetralogy of Fallot with the placement of a transannular RVOT patch and a previous BT shunt. She was referred to us due to severe pulmonary valve regurgitation, which led to severe pulmonary insufficiency and significant right ventricular dilation.
Even though she has been well, surgical therapy was necessary due to the severity of the pulmonary valve regurgitation in conjunction with the right ventricle dilation. The indicated therapy for Ionela was a pulmonary valve replacement and a pulmonary artery patch plastic performed through a minimally invasive technique.
Following surgery, Ionela was closely monitored in the ICU unit for a few days before being transferred to the Intermediate Care Unit, where she remained until her discharge, accompanied by her caring and supportive mother.
In this picture, taken just 7 days post-surgery, Ionela is showing remarkable recovery and growing stronger with each passing day. She is now prepared to return to Romania for continued monitoring by her cardiologist. Apart from her devotion, Ionela's fast recovery is attributed to the minimally invasive techniques used during her surgery, resulting in an easier, faster, and less painful recovery process.
We are truly grateful that our center had the opportunity to provide Ionela with the necessary treatment, ensuring her unique medical needs were met with expertise and compassion.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ronald McDonald House Charities Cyprus for their generous provision of free accommodation for Ionela's mother during her hospitalization. Your support was invaluable and made a significant difference for Ionela's family during this challenging time.
Sending lots of love and hugs to this wonderful young girl and her incredible mother!
