I Need Bypass Surgery. Is a Sternotomy Necessary?
Not always.
Coronary artery disease is a common condition on our island, affecting a large portion of the population and often requiring coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).
Thanks to advances in cardiac surgery, there are now cases where bypass surgery can be performed without a full sternotomy.
What is the MIDCAB technique?
At the Cardiac Innovation Center, we offer the MIDCAB (Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass) technique, a modern minimally invasive approach that allows bypass surgery to be performed through a small incision on the left side of the chest, without the need for a full sternotomy.
What are the advantages of this technique?
The potential benefits of the MIDCAB technique include:
Smaller incision
Faster mobilization
Less post-operative pain
Faster return to daily activities
Is MIDCAB suitable for all patients?
Every patient is unique.
Suitability for this technique is assessed individually by our cardiac surgery team, as MIDCAB is not appropriate for all cases. Our goal is always to select the safest and most appropriate surgical approach for each patient.
